Chivalry
When I was a young lad of 16 seasons passed, I attempted my first date with a young lady I found attractive. I drove to her house in my 72 Cutless Supreme with its 455 V8, knowing that the engine alone would not impress this young lady I did what I thought was right and attempted to open the door for her to get in my car, she turned and slapped me, I was shocked stunned and confused. I was trying to impress this girl but my attempt at being polite seemed to have back fired.
To this day I don’t know why she slapped me, I was only being polite, but it is becoming more clear of what she may have been thinking, and this is all due to my wife.
You see, I still open the doors for the ladies, no matter what they look like, and I still wait in the elevator and let the ladies out first. I have been doing this for a long time and even do it for my wife and daughter, but little did I actually realize how much this bothered my wife, she always looked so annoyed as she waited 10 yards ahead of me as I held the door open for women that followed after her, I always chalked it up to her being in a hurry, but I found out this is not the case.
You see, my wife finally yelled at me about doing it, she feels that some how I am degrading her, or something along those lines, which is silly if you ask me, I am only being polite, but she sees it as being degrading, like I assume she can’t do it or something along those lines, to be honest I am still not clear on why this is an issue.
Chivalry is a term relating to the medieval institution of knighthood. It is usually associated with ideals of knightly virtues, honor and courtly love. Today, the terms chivalry and chivalrous are used to describe courteous behavior, especially that of men towards women.
See that? I am not the only one who thinks its just a polite thing to do, but alas, maybe I should finally give up being polite, it’s obviously being taken the wrong way by the person it matters the most to. And who knows how many other women found it offensive.
